Below is the structure of the Registered Public Health Nursing (RPHN) Licensing Examination:

Paper 1

Principles of Public Health Nursing – 180 MCQs

Duration: 3 hours


Paper 2

Principles of Disease Management and Control – 180 MCQs

Duration: 3 hours


Paper 3

General Paper – 100 MCQs

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes


Paper 4

Practical Examination – Community and Preventive Health

 • Home visits and community assessment

 • Child welfare clinic activities

 • Antenatal and postnatal services in the community

 • Health education and promotion

 • Immunization services

 • Screening and surveillance activities


Paper 5

Care Study (Community Health Focus)-FCC


The RPHN Care Study assesses the candidate’s ability to apply the nursing process in community/public health settings. Candidates are expected to:

 1. Introduction

 • Brief description of the community/family/individual chosen.

 2. Community/Family Assessment

 • Demographics, health status, environmental conditions, cultural practices.

 • Identification of health problems through interviews, surveys, or observation.

 3. Public Health Nursing Diagnoses

 • Identification of priority community/family health needs.

 4. Planning

 • Developing health objectives that are measurable and time-bound.

 • Strategies for health promotion, disease prevention, and control.

 5. Implementation

 • Interventions such as home visits, health talks, immunization sessions, sanitation campaigns, and referrals.

 6. Evaluation

 • Measuring impact of interventions on individuals, families, or communities.

 7. Conclusion and Recommendations

 • Summary of findings and care provided.

 • Recommendations for sustained community health improvement.


Note: The RPHN exam emphasizes preventive, promotive, and rehabilitative care rather than curative care, reflecting the public health nurse’s role in the community.
