Practical Examination – Psychiatric Nursing Practice

 • Mental status examination (MSE)

 • Therapeutic communication and interviewing skills

Paper 5

Care Study (Psychiatric Focus)

The Care Study for Mental Health Nursing evaluates a candidate’s ability to apply the nursing process in psychiatric and mental health care. Candidates are expected to:

 1. Introduction

 • Patient profile (age, sex, presenting complaint, psychiatric diagnosis).

 2. History and Assessment

 • Psychiatric history, medical history, family and social history.

 • Mental Status Examination (appearance, behavior, mood, thought, perception, cognition, judgment, insight).

 3. Nursing Diagnoses

 • Identification of actual/potential problems (e.g., disturbed thought processes, risk for violence, impaired social interaction).

 4. Planning

 • Setting individualized objectives for psychiatric care (symptom management, safety, social functioning).

 5. Implementation

 • Nursing interventions such as:

 • Establishing a therapeutic nurse–patient relationship.

 • Administering and monitoring psychotropic medications.

 • Teaching coping mechanisms and relapse prevention.

 • Collaborating with psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers.

 6. Evaluation

 • Reviewing patient progress against objectives (e.g., reduced hallucinations, improved mood, better social interaction).

 7. Conclusion and Recommendations

 • Summary of psychiatric care given.

 • Referrals, follow-up, and community mental health support.
